COLORADO SPRINGS, United States – USA Hockey announced its 22-player roster for the 2009 IIHF World U20 Championship in Ottawa, December 26, 2008, to January 5, 2009.
Among the 13 forwards on the roster, four played for the U20 team that finished fourth at the 2008 IIHF World U20 Championship in the Czech Republic. They include Matt Rust (Univ. of Michigan), Jordan Schroeder (Univ. of Minnesota),James van Riemsdyk (Univ. of New Hampshire) and Colin Wilson (Boston University).
Wilson, who was selected seventh in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by Nashville, currently ranks second in NCAA I in points per game (1.54) and leads Boston University with 20 points (7-13). Schroeder and van Riemsdyk, who was selected second in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by Philadelphia and was a member of the bronze medal team at the 2007 IIHF World U20 Championship in Sweden, are tied for 11th nationally in points per game at 1.36.
The seven-man defence is highlighted by three returnees from the 2008 team including Jonathon Blum (Vancouver Giants), Ian Cole (Univ. of Notre Dame) and Cade Fairchild (Univ. of Minnesota).
Blum leads all Western Hockey League defencemen with 34 points (13-21) in 22 games, while Fairchild's 12 points (2-10) through 14 games tops all University of Minnesota defensemen.
Minding the nets for Team USA are Thomas McCollum (Guelph Storm) and Josh Unice (Kitchener Rangers). McCollum ranks second in the Ontario Hockey League with a 92.4 save percentage and 2.29 goals-against average through 24 games. Unice, who helped Team USA to the silver medal at the 2007 IIHF World U18 Championship, has appeared in 12 games for the Kitchener Rangers and posted an 89.1 save percentage.
Ron Rolston, head coach of the U.S. U18 national team with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, is the head coach of this year's U20 team. Nate Leaman (Union College) and P.K. O'Handley (Waterloo Black Hawks) are the assistant coaches, while Jeff Blashill (Indiana Ice) is the goaltending coach.
