SEGELTORP, Sweden – The Women’s Euro Hockey Tour ended with a Finnish triumph last weekend. Finland won both the tournament in Segeltorp, Sweden along with the earlier event on home ice in Leppävirta last December.
As was the case in the past, the title came down to Finland and Sweden. While the Swedes won all the bronze medals the World Women’s Championships and the Olympics for three consecutive seasons from 2005-2007, Finland was the best European team at the 2008 World Women’s Championship.
Finland beat Sweden 2-1 in a close game in the deciding game of the 12-game tour. Marja Voutilainen scored the eventual game-winner midway thought the game with 35-34 shots in favour of the Swedes.
The tour was a positive warm-up for the Finns, which next host the 2009 World Women’s Championship in Hämeenlinna, Finland, April 3-12.
