SLANY, Czech Republic – Germany won a Women’s U18 exhibition tournament in Slany, Czech Republic, three weeks before hosting the second IIHF World Women’s U18 Championship in Füssen.
The four-nation tournament was mixed with teams that already participated in the inaugural World Women’s U18 Championship last year – bronze-medal winner Czech Republic and Germany – and two teams that will debut in the inaugural World Women’s U18 Championship Division I – Austria and Slovakia.
Germany began the tournament with two tight victories over the Czech Republic, 6-5 in overtime, and against Slovakia, 5-4. The last game saw them play also unbeaten Austria and the game was easily won 7-2 with Manuela Anwander and Nadine Marx scoring two goals each.
Host Czech Republic finished in third place by beating neighbours Slovakia, 4-2, in the last game. The Czechs also announced their 20-player roster for the World Women’s U18 Championship. (link: statistiky.zenskyhokej.cz/rd/output_actuality.php)
The 2009 World Women’s U18 Championship will be played in Füssen, Germany, January 5-10, 2009, with reigning champion United States, Canada, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Switzerland and Russia.
The inaugural 2009 World Women’s U18 Championship, Division I, will take place in Chambéry, France, from December 28, 2008, to January 2, 2009. The participating teams are Norway, Austria, Japan, Slovakia and France.
