Syomin pots pair as Russians claim first title since ‘09

HELSINKI – It’s just like old times: Russia is back on top of the hockey world. Unbeaten from wire to wire, Russia got a dominating performance from its NHL superstars to defeat underdog Slovakia 6-2 in Sunday’s gold medal game.

HELSINKI – Three first period goals were enough for the Czechs to beat Finland 3-2, and win IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship bronze.

HELSINKI – Miroslav Satan's second goal of the game, a beautiful short-handed marker early in the third, broke a 1-1 tie and led Slovakia to a 3-1 victory over the Czech Republic to give his team a place in the gold-medal game tomorrow.

HELSINKI – If Yevgeni Malkin isn’t the world’s best player right now, he’s sure close. The towering centre scored a semi-final hat trick to lift Russia over Finland 6-2 and into the gold medal game.
Joensuu scores winner with nine seconds left, hosts to semis
HELSINKI – Jesse Joensuu scored his second goal of the night with nine seconds remaining in the game as Finland beat Team USA 3-2 to advance to the semi-final against Russia.
Yemelin’s floater dooms Norway as Russians advance
STOCKHOLM – It wasn’t easy for top-seeded Russia versus Norway, but Zinetula Bilyaletdinov’s team finally put away the underdogs with a 5-2 victory to advance to Saturday’s semi-finals. Alexei Yemelin got the winner early in a three-goal third period for Russia.
Getzlaf major leads to Handzus's goal, Slovakia to semis
HELSINKI – Michal Handzus scored with 2:28 left in regulation to break a 3-3 tie and take Slovakia to the semi-finals. The goal came on a five-minute power play after a knee-on-knee hit by Canada's Ryan Getzlaf on Juraj Mikus, who had to be helped off the ice.
Bäckström starts with win, quarter-finals: RUS-NOR, SWE-CZE
STOCKHOLM – Sweden completed Preliminary Round play with a solid 4-0 win over Latvia in the evening tilt of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship at Globe Arena.
