OTTAWA - Team Germany is scheduled to hold a special autograph-signing session at the Samsung FanFest on Sunday. It starts at 3 pm at the Aberdeen Pavilion (1015 Bank St.) next to the Civic Centre. There are also hockey video games to check out and a special Hockey Hall of Fame exhibit.
According to the Edmonton Sun, Team Canada received an email from a member of the 1997 and 1998 Canadian World Junior squads prior to its Sunday game versus Kazakhstan. It essentially said: “From the guys on the '97 team, win a fifth-straight gold. From the guys on the '98 team, beat Kazakhstan!” The Kazakhs shocked Canada 6-3 in 1998, and Canada wound up with an eighth-place finish, its worst ever.
Forward Stefan Della Rovere was listed as questionable for Canada on Sunday after suffering a soft tissue injury above his skate boot due to a shot-block. Defenceman P.K. Subban has been tabbed as the replacement up front if any forwards are unable to go, as Canada is carrying eight blueliners at this tournament.
Keith Aulie (6-foot-6, or 198 cm) and Tyler Myers (6-foot-7, or 201 cm) are playing as an ultra-tall defensive pairing for Canada here in Ottawa. The last time a country brought comparable twin towers on the back end to the IIHF World Junior Championship was in Vancouver 2006, when Slovakia iced Boris Valabik (6-foot-7, or 201 cm) and Vladimir Mihalik (6-foot-8, or 203 cm).
