Slovakia vs. Norway 2-6 (2-1, 0-3, 0-2) Game Sheet

Norway finished their tournament on a high note Saturday, beating the Slovaks 6-2 for their first victory in Germany 2011.

Despite being outshot 51-25 in the game, the Norwegians managed to make their chances count. The Slovaks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, with a goal from Andrej Bires and a short hander courtesy of Bruno Mraz. But, it was all Norway from then on, beginning when team captain Magnus Hoff cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal in the final minutes of the first.

Early in the second frame, a power play goal by Jonas Knutsen, scored on a two-man advantage, was followed up less than a minute and a half later with a score by Martin Lund to put the Norwegians ahead by a goal. Slovakia’s play was totally undisciplined in the period, as the team was sent to the penalty box thirteen times. Hoff added another power play goal for Norway before the end of the period, and his teammates Magnus Soberg and Espen Salo added two more on the man advantage to seal the game in the third period.

Switzerland vs. Czech Republic 4-2 (2-1, 1-0, 1-1) Game Sheet

In a game where both teams involved were safe from relegation, the Swiss posted a 4-2 victory over the Czech Republic to close their U18 campaign with a win.

Czech star Dmitri Jaskin scored the first goal halfway through the first period. Switzerland responded with a pair of scores just over a minute apart from Sven Andrighetti and Alessio Bertagia. The game devolved into a series of penalties in the second period, but after killing off three successive penalties the Swiss added another goal from forward Tanner Richard.

The Czechs managed one more goal in the third period, but Lino Martschini’s marker a minute and a half later put the game away for good. Switzerland will earn seventh place overall in the 2011 U18 standing, with the Czech Republic in eighth.

Finland vs. Germany 6-0
(1-0, 2-0, 3-0) Game Sheet

There was not much fight left in the Germans after their close semi-final loss to Team Canada, and the Finns rolled to a 6-0 victory to earn fifth place in this year’s U18 standings.

Joel Armia had a pair of goals and an assist while captain Markus Granlund scored a goal and had three helpers to lead the Finns. Finland also got goals from Mika Salomaki, Heikki Liedes, and Joonas Valkonen, who was selected Finland’s player of the game.
