GENEVA – Former Swiss national team player Fritz Naef passed away on Sunday. The former Olympian and Swiss league scoring leader was 80.

Naef started his career with HC Davos where he won his first national championship in his first season as a 16-year-old in 1950. Four years later he moved to the francophone part of the country where he played for Lausanne HC, Servette HC and Genève-Servette HC. In 1959, 1960 and between 1965 and 1968 he was the scoring leader of the Swiss National League A and holds the league record for most goals scored in a game: 8.

Naef, whose number 6 was retired by Genève-Servette in 2004, represented Switzerland in 51 international games in which he scored 52 goals. It was a time in which the Swiss struggled staying among the elite nations but his tournaments include the 1956 Olympic Winter Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo where he scored six goals and the A-Pool of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in 1955 and 1962.
