STOCKHOLM – Roger Rönnberg will be the new head coach of the Swedish U20 national team starting next season. He signed a three-year contract with the Swedish Ice Hockey Association.
Rönnberg, 38, follows Pär Mårts, who will lead the men’s national team next season after three years with the U20s. In his three years with the juniors, Mårts led the team to two silver medals (2008, 2009) and the bronze in 2010 at the World U20 Championships.
Rönnberg was an assistant coach from 2005-2007 and in the last three years he was Bengt-Åke Gustafsson’s assistant for the men’s national team. At the same time he was coaching Eliteserien club Luleå HF where his contract expires after five years.
“It’s fantastic to get the chance to work in hockey at this level,” Rönnberg said.
Sweden will play in the 2011 IIHF World Championship in Buffalo and Niagara, New York, December 26, 2010, to January 5, 2011.
