TRENTINO, Italy – The ice hockey tournaments of the 2013 Winter Universiade in the Trentino Region in Italy started on Tuesday with a successful beginning for the host nation.
Italy opened the men’s ice hockey tournament played in Alba di Canazei and Cavalese with a 4-2 win against Latvia.
To make it even better, the first goal of the game was scored by Simon Kostner, who plays at the same arena for Serie A team HC Fassa.
“Scoring a goal in ice hockey always gives you a great feeling,” Kostner told FISU.net after the game. “I think we played well and held off our opponents successfully. It looked like it took them two periods to get used to the altitude here in Canazei.”
Italy started the game with four unanswered goal before Latvia, which participates for the first time with an ice hockey team at the Universiade, cut the lead with two third-period goals.
Canada started the tournament with a 12-1 victory against Japan and four goals from Nick MacNeil while Team USA edged Sweden 2-0.
The men’s ice hockey tournament includes 12 teams divided into three groups:
Group A: Italy, USA, Sweden, Latvia
Group B: Russia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Great Britain
Group C: Canada, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Japan
After the group stage the top-8 teams according to overall ranking will advance to the quarter-finals.
The women’s ice hockey tournament in Pergine started with a 10-1 victory of Japan against Great Britain. Team USA defeated Russia 4-2 despite Russia having a 35-24 shot advantage, and Canada blanked newcomer Spain 21-0.
The six teams in the women’s ice hockey tournament will play a single round robin followed by semi-finals and placement games.
