UFA – Russia’s forward Maxim Shalunov has been suspended for one game in the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship for a cross-checking incident in Wednesday’s game against Slovakia.
The incident occurred at 17:40 of the third period in Wednesday’s game between Slovakia and Russia. The reviewed situation shows Maxim Shalunov delivering a cross-check to the face of Slovakia’s defenceman Tomas Nechala, who sustained a facial laceration requiring medical treatment.
The player received a double-minor penalty on the play. Upon video review of the incident, as well as the referee’s report, the IIHF Disciplinary Panel concluded that it was a reckless and dangerous infraction which called for supplementary disciplinary action.
The disciplinary panel took into consideration the player’s statement during the hearing that it was not the intention to hurt the opponent and that he was trying to brace himself for possible contact to be delivered by Tomas Nechala.
Maxim Shalunov will miss the game against the USA on Friday, December 28.
