VALENTUNA, Sweden - Will AIK Solna remain Europe's best women's club team? The team from the Stockholm region won its first game at the 2008 IIHF European Women's Champions Cup against Finnish champions Espoo Blues, 4-2.
AIK Solna opened the tournament as favourites after winning the last three EWCC titles. Nevertheless, it was not an easy victory for the Swedes. At 17:20, Espoo's Anna Julin scored the first goal. The Finns held the slim 1-0 lead until Danijella Rundqvist's equalised at 29:35, it was Michelle Karvinen, who regained the lead for Espoo with a shorthander at 32:08.
AIK Solna got back on track in the third period, netting three unanswered goals and out-shoouting Espoo 21-11. Isabelle Jordansson sparked the comeback at 41:03 and Katarina Timglas scored the eventual game-winner at 50:48. With 43 seconds left, Pernilla Winberg sealed the win with the empty netter.
The five-team final tournament continues today with the games OSC Berlin (GER) vs. HC Lugano (SUI) and Espoo Blues (FIN) vs. Aisulu Almaty (KAZ).Click here for the tournament's coverage
