Lugano catches up with AIK

First wins for HC Lugano and the Espoo Blues

VALLENTUNA, Sweden – Swiss champion HC Lugano remained undefeated team at the 2008 IIHF European Women’s Champions Cup after beating OSC Berlin, 4-3. Defending champion AIK Solna is also unbeaten.

It was a tight game throughout, which was decided by three goals of Lugano’s Canadian forward Carly Haggard and one of her compatriot Fiona McLeod. The latter opened the score at 7:58 while Haggard put the puck into the net for the 2-1, 3-2 and 4-2. For the Swiss it was the second win of the season against the German champion after a 5-3 victory at an EWCC preliminary tournament in Berlin.

After a 4-2 loss against title-holder AIK Solna, Finnish champions Espoo Blues got their first win with a 3-0 shutout against Aisulu Almaty. Blues forward Michelle Karvinen had an excellent start with two goals at just 32 seconds into the game and then the second and 5:02 later. Katarina Soikkanen secured the victory with the 3-0 goal at 22:31 while Espoo netminder Noora Raty made 27 saves to deserve her shutout against the Kazakhs.
