Order of Merit given to Ferenc Studniczky

BUDAPEST – Ferenc Studniczky, the president of the Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation, received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic (Civil Division) from the country’s president Laszlo Solyom.

The award was given for Studniczky’s efforts in making hockey popular in Hungary. As a result that the sport was in the spotlight in recent years, most notably thanks to the qualification to the 2009 IIHF World Championship.

„The promotion was one of the most memorable events of Hungarian ice hockey,” said Studnicky. „We have been building the sport step by step and once we had the opportunity to experience what it means to play among the best teams of the world. The World Championship in Switzerland was inevitably the greatest celebration of Hungarian hockey. I am sure we could share the real passion of hockey with the whole country. Playing with the best nations was the biggest dream for decades and we did it.”

Now, after getting relegated from the top division, Studnicky said that there’s much more to do to make the fans happy.

In his speech he thanked his family and the men and women who passionately work for the sport.
