MEXICO CITY – The ice hockey season has also started in Mexico as the first games were played in the Azteca Tournament with Jurasicos of San Jeronimo winning.
While the Elite League will begin in November with five teams, the Division 2 National Championship began with a record number of 11 teams from Leon, Mexico City, Monterrey and Tamaulipas.
The Azteca Tournament was played at the San Jeronimo and Lomas Verdes ice rinks last week. Three other tournaments (Olmeca, Tolteca and Maya) will follow this season. The 11 teams in two groups played 27 games in five hockey nights.
The final was close between the San Jeronimo teams when the senior team Jurasicos beat the junior team Osos 2, 2-0.
“The 11 teams was the highest number of ice hockey teams Mexico has ever had in a single tournament,” said Joaquin de la Garma, the President of the Mexican Ice Hockey Federation.
Mexico is currently ranked 38th and the country will host two international tournaments with the 2010 IIHF World Championship Division II Group A in Mexico City (April 11-17) and the 2010 IIHF World U18 Championship Division III Group B in Monterrey.
