RIGA – Leonids Beresnevs was named head coach of the Latvian U20 and U18 national teams following the relegation of both squads from the top division in 2010.
Beresnevs was the head coach of the men’s national team from 1996-1999 and 2004-2006. He led Latvia to the top division in 1996, and at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. He was replaced before the 2006 World Championship following the last-place finish at the Olympics.
After leaving the national team, he coached in the Latvian league for the Tartu Big Diamonds (Estonia) and ASK Ogre. Since 2009, he has been the head coach of the Dinamo Riga Juniors, the farm team of the KHL club.
The 51-year-old took over the U18 national team in March when Aleksandrs Klinsovs had to resign due to health reasons.
Now Beresnevs will also coach the U20 national team replacing Andrejs Maticins. The U20s will fight for promotion in the Division I Group A in Bobruisk, Belarus, December 13-19, against Belarus, Italy, Ukraine, Japan and Great Britain.
The World U18 Championship Division I Group A will be hosted in Riga, April 10-16, 2011. The other participating teams are Hungary, Japan, Kazakhstan, Great Britain and Italy.
