Energija can’t fly

Continental Cup Group A with three teams

JACA, Spain – Group A of the IIHF Continental Cup will be played with only three teams this weekend because Energija Elektrenai was unable to fly to Spain.

Lithuania’s champion got stuck at Vilnius Airport on Thursday. Their flight to Spain was cancelled because Lithuanian air carrier Star1 Airlines stopped operations. Due to insolvency their only plane was confiscated and after 18 hours at the airport no solution could be found for the Lithuanian team. Due to this, the team will not be able to participate in the tournament.

Group A in Jaca will be played with the three remaining teams according to following schedule:

Friday, Sep. 24, 21:00: CH Jaca (ESP) vs. Bat Yam (ISR)
Saturday, Sep. 25, 21:00: Bat Yam (ISR) vs. Ankara University (TUR)
Sunday, Sep. 26, 21:00: Ankara University (TUR) vs. CH Jaca (ESP)

Due to the reduction of games, they will be officiated in the four-man system.

The winner will be qualified for Group B in Tilburg, Netherlands, which will be played October 22-24 along with Group C in Maribor, Slovenia. The third stage takes place November 26-28 and the competition concludes with the final tournament in Minsk, Belarus, January 14-16.
