JACA, Spain – Spanish champion CH Jaca won Group A of the 2010-2011 IIHF Continental Cup and advances to the second round.
The team from the Aragon region defeated Israel’s Bat Yam 15-0 in the opening game before winning against Turkish champion Ankara University 7-1 on Sunday night.
The Turks finished in second place thanks to an 8-3 victory against Bat Yam.
The fourth participant, Lithuania’s Energija Elektrenai, couldn’t participate because their flight was cancelled on Thursday due to insolvency of the national air carrier Star1 Airlines.
Jaca’s first line was outstanding and led the tournament in scoring. Spanish national team player Ivan Gracia was the scoring leader with ten points (2+8) followed by his linemates, Canadian forward Mathieu Ouellette (5+4) and American forward James McKenna (2+7).
Jose Alonso, one of the Spanish national team’s goalkeepers, led the netminders in save percentage with 97.5%. He allowed one goal while having 39 saves.
Jaca will travel to Tilburg, Netherlands, for the next round that takes place October 22-24. The other teams in Group B are the Tilburg Trappers, Kohtla-Järve Viru Sputnik (Estonia) and Cracovia Krakow (Poland).
Group C takes place on the same days in Maribor, Slovenia, with HDK Maribor, Dab Dunaujvaros (Hungary), SC Miercurea Ciuc (Romania) and Sary-Arka Karaganda (Kazakhstan).
The winners of both second-round groups advance to the third stage.
