SEOUL – The Russian MHL Red Stars won the 2012 IIHF U20 Challenge Cup of Asia in Seoul, Korea, after having played four out of five games.

The U19 selection of players from the Russian top junior league MHL (Molodezhnaya Khokkeinaya Liga) has proven to be unstoppable for the Asian teams.

The Koreans had some hope after losing the first period of the opening game only 1-0 in front of 1,075 fans at the Mok-Dong Arena, but the Russians swept their toughest competitors Korea (6-0) and Japan (7-0) before securing the tournament win by steamrolling China, 15-0. They will conclude the tournament against last-ranked Chinese Taipei on Friday.

Host Korea with two wins on its account together with Japan and China with one win each will compete for the medal ranks in the next two days.

Maxim Shalunov (6+2) from Belye Medvedi Chelyabinsk and Alexander Kadeikin (4+4) of Atlant Mytishi have been the Red Stars’ most successful scorers so far with eight points apiece.

The tournament’s leading scorer, however, is Makuru Furuhashi, who scored six goals and collected four assist in two games.
