HARBIN, China - With the results of the Preliminary Round, the automatic berths to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver are known. Six teams are automatically qualified to the Games according to their placement in the IIHF Women’s World Ranking after the World Championship in Harbin.
Before the start of the 2008 World Women’s Championship, Canada, USA, Finland and Sweden were already assured a spot in the 2010 Olympics. Joining those four teams will be Switzerland and Russia. By avoiding the Relegation Round at this year’s event, both gained 20 points and made it mathematically impossible for Germany or China to finish in the top six.
Entering this year’s championship, Switzerland was tied with Germany with 1545 points, while Russia had 1535 points. The IIHF will publish the updated Women’s World Ranking after the conclusion of the World Championship in Harbin.
The two remaining positions in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games will be determined through two qualification tournaments, which will take place in the 2009 season.
