RIGA – The Latvian Ice Hockey Federation (LHF) has extended the contract with Leonids Tambijevs as head coach of the Latvian U20 national team.
The board decided to continue with Tambijevs at a meeting on Friday.
The 42-year-old has been the most successful national team player with 150 points (66+84) in 208 international games during his 15-year long career with the maroon-and-white team.
Tambijevs became head coach of the U18 national team at the 2012 IIHF U18 World Championship in the Czech Republic, which he led to a ninth-place finish, and was promoted to lead the U20 national team the year after.
Latvia finished in tenth place after losing the deciding relegation-round game to Germany at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship in Ufa, Russia, and was relegated.
In the upcoming season Latvia will play in the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division I Group A in Sanok with Belarus, Denmark, Slovenia, Austria and host nation Poland.
Since 2010, Tambijevs has been head coach of HK Riga, the junior team of Dinamo Riga that plays in the Russian junior league MHL.
