On January 16, the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Learn to Play Program was officially launched in Romania.

The Romanian Ice Hockey Federation spent a lot of time translating the Learn to Play Program Practice Manuals and the Introduction to Coaching Course for the Seminar. General Secretary Marius Gliga and Romanian Learn to Play Program Instructor Victor Corduban worked along with two other experienced coaches to present the program for Romania’s two newest clubs, Ice Magic Buzau and Olimpia Ploiesti. After the seminar all the materials and manuals were given to the clubs to use and refer to in the future.

An ice session took place in the arena with over 30 children and six coaches participating. During this event the children took part in a cross-ice practice and played small-area games.

The Romanian Ice Hockey Federation has planned two more Learn to Play Program seminars over the next month in the other cities with arenas and children’s teams. They have also organized an evaluation process with one practice a month assessed and feedback regarding the program provided to the clubs.

The Learn to Play Program is the IIHF’s successful program for introducing entry-level players to the joys of ice hockey. The goal of this program is to teach children, primarily between the ages of 6 and 9 years old, the basic ice hockey skills by creating a fun and enjoyable environment for them to learn.

The program is based on the cross-ice/small area practicing and playing model that has been used in many of the leading ice hockey nations. It is also aimed at the education of instructors and coaches as it works in conjunction with the Introduction to Coaching Course, which forms the first level of the IIHF Coaching Program.

For interested coaches, the IIHF Learn to Play Practice Manuals and the Introduction to Coaching Course Manuals are available on IIHF.com to be viewed and implemented. Click here to download these manuals in as PDFs.
