BOSTON – Slovakia coach Jan Filc showed his poker face when he named Miroslav Satan to the Olympic roster, although the forward hasn’t played a single game so far this season.
Now Satan’s patience has paid off, as he signed a $700,000 deal for the remainder of the season with the Boston Bruins.
Satan won the Stanley Cup for the first time in his 13-year career last year with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He recorded 354 goals and 367 assists in 1012 career NHL games.
Satan has represented Slovakia in nine World Championships (including one B-pool and one C-pool World Championship after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia) and two World Cups. He will play his fourth Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, having previously appeared in 1994, 2002 and 2006. He was the top goal-scorer in the 1994 Olympics with nine goals – at the first top-level event Slovakia played as an independent nation.
The 35-year-old was the MVP of the 2000 IIHF World Championship when Slovakia lost the final to the Czech Republic, and he was also on the All-Star Team when Slovakia won its first World Championship in 2002 with a 4-3 victory in the gold-medal game against Russia. Satan also won silver in 1996 and bronze in 2003.
Satan is the all-time leading goal-scorer of the Slovak national team. He has scored 70 goals in 123 international games.
