What comes to mind when you think of Switzerland?
Mountains, snow-covered peaks, the diverse culture associated with its four national languages German, French, Italian and Rhaetian Romansh? Or perhaps the well-preserved towns and historic sites? Or rather the numerous sports opportunities on offer in the holiday land of Switzerland? Think all this - and yet some more.
Switzerland is a land-locked country with great diversity and many particularities to offer on a small surface. Remarkable variety is one of Switzerland's main characteristics. Due to its Central European location, Switzerland is open to climatic influences from the four main Atlantic, Northern European, Mediterranean and Continental climatic zones. On the country's Central Plateau the climate is temperate, whereas elsewhere it differs considerably from region to region.
The Alps and Pre-Alps cover 60%, the Central Plateau 30% and the Jura 10% of the country.
