Tournament Format

The preliminary round will be played in 4 groups (A-D) with 4 teams each. The groups A and B form the Top Division, the groups C and D form Division I. The two last-placed teams of the groups A and B and the two first-placed teams of the groups C and D play for 4th place in group A and B to participate in the Top Division playoffs. The losers of those games play as first placed teams in group C and D to participate in the Division I playoffs. Playoffs starting with the quarterfinals and placement games will be played both in the Top Division and in Division I.

Relegation format: The best seven teams of the Top Division and the winner of Division I will be qualified for the 2009 IIHF World InLine Championship Top Division. The last-placed team of the Top Division (loser of the 7th-place game) will be relegated to the 2009 IIHF World InLine Championship Division I.

The ranking of the groups is based according to the result of the last World Championships performance of the respective countries in the IIHF InLine Hockey Program and the qualification rounds.

In the preliminary round, the Top Division will be played in the main arena, the Division I games in the small arena.

The Top Division playoffs will be played in the main arena, the Division I playoffs in the small arena. Both rinks will have "AXXESS ICE COURT" floors, the official IIHF Championship Floor.

All games in the preliminary round and in the playoffs will be played with 5-minute sudden-death overtime and a penalty shootout in case of a tie. The final games will be played with a 12- minute sudden-death overtime, followed by a penalty shootout competition in case of a tie.

Teams will be awarded points on the following system:

  • Win after regular time = 3 points
  • Win after overtime or shootout = 2 points
  • Loss after overtime or shootout = 1 point
  • Loss after regular time = 0 points

Top Division

Group A: Sweden (1), Austria (4), Slovenia (5), Slovakia (8).

Group B: Finland (2), Germany (3), USA (6), Czech Republic (7).

Division I

Group C: Brazil (9), Australia (12), Great Britain (13), Bulgaria (16).

Group D: New Zealand (10), Hungary (11), Japan (14), Canada (15).

Future events

Qualifications to the 2009 IIHF InLine Hockey World Championship

  • Namibia vs. South Africa will play the best-of-two qualification on August 24 and 30, 2008, in Namibia and South Africa.
  • Chinese Taipei is the Asian-Oceanian qualifier for the 2009 IIHF InLine Hockey World Championship.
