Former IIHF official, referee supervisor Egon Frei.

Egon Frei, a former international referee, IIHF Referee Supervisor and Referee-in-chief in Switzerland, passed away on 11 May in Erlenbach after a heart stroke. He was 75.

Born in St. Moritz, Frei was a referee and linesman in Switzerland and at various international tournaments in lower division but also in the top division of the 1981 IIHF World Junior Championship. After hanging up his skates he worked in officiating off the ice and was a long-time referee-in-chief for the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation. He also worked as an IIHF Referee Supervisor, most recently at the 2004 IIHF World Championship in the Czech Republic.
