During the weekend the Swiss U20 national team started its pre-event camp before the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship. Head coach Christian Wohlwend named 27 candidates.
The team will travel to Canada on Wednesday where it will be joined by 11 player competing with clubs in North America. Of the two Swiss juniors playing professional hockey in North America, 2017’s number-one draft Nico Hischier of the New Jersey Devils is missing but defenceman Tobias Geisser of the AHL’s Hershey Bears will wear his country’s colours. Most of the players compete in the top-two senior pro leagues in Switzerland, two join from Swedish junior club teams.
This year’s Swiss team travels to North America with more experience. 13 players – almost half of the camp roster – competed as underage players at last year’s World Juniors.
The team will play exhibition games next week against Canada, Kazakhstan and Russia. The roster cut to the final 23 players is planned on 23 December before the last exhibition game against Russia on Christmas Eve.
