U.S. top Women’s World Ranking

Number one in Espoo and in the IIHF Women’s World Ranking – the United States defended their top spot after a tough battle for gold against host Finland.

The United States continue to lead the IIHF Women’s World Ranking following the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship. Canada remains in second place but Finland came many points closer thanks to its silver-medal finish on home ice in Espoo.

Scroll down for the 2019 IIHF Women’s World Ranking, which takes into consideration the IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championships from 2016 to 2019 as well as the 2018 Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament.

Russia and Switzerland remain fourth and fifth in the Women’s World Ranking while Japan moved up to historical heights. The Japanese overtook Sweden (now 7th) for sixth place. The Czech Republic also improved one spot and is now 8th while Germany fell to 9th. France completes the top-10.

Denmark, one of the two teams promoted to the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship in Halifax and Truro, Canada, improved one position and is now 11th at the expense of Austria (12th). They are followed by Norway (13th), Hungary (14th) and Slovakia (15th). Hungary is the other of the two promoted teams after winning the Division I Group A on home ice in Budapest.

The biggest move happened at the other end of the ranking. After moving up a level for the second time in three years Chinese Taipei improved from 37th to 33rd place.

The IIHF Women’s World Ranking includes a record number of 39 countries following the successful entry of Ukraine into the IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship program.
