The winner of the prize medal design competition for the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Tampere and Helsinki has been announced. The winning design for the medal is designed by Pauli Maronen, who incorporated a theme with Tampere's new Deck Arena and a hockey player behind the medal.

The design competition for the prize medals of the 2022 IIHF World Championship was opened in January 2021to the general public. The competition created widespread interest and a total of about 70 medal proposals were received. The competition was genuinely international, with proposals coming from Finland, Estonia, Great Britain, New Zealand, Russia, Belarus, Canada, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Indonesia and Italy.

The winner was a medal designed by Finn Pauli Maronen. The unique design of the medal and strong references to the sport itself attracted instant attention. The theme of the medal is the Tampere Deck Arena, which will be completed in December and will serve as the main arena for the 2022 IIHF WM.

Maronen was delighted to win the competition and says that the idea for the design of the medal started with the shapes of the main stage of the upcoming 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship: Tampere Deck Arena.

“Instead of the usual round shape of the medal, I wanted to do something more special, so I created an octagonal shape for the medal,” says the designer Maronen.

In the medal design competition, the winner was chosen by the competition jury, chaired by the IIHF’s Vice President Kalervo Kummola.

”It’s been a long time since Tampere has hosted the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and the games will be played in the brand new arena. Tampere Deck Arena is such a significant thing both domestically and internationally so it’s great that it’s included in the medal,” says Kummola.
