The brand-new Tampere Deck Arena will co-host the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship played on 13–29 May 2022 in Tampere and Helsinki, Finland.

Tampere’s new Deck Arena got a touch of organising events when its first hockey game was played on the arena on Friday. The arena was sold out on its very first game night when local teams Tappara and Ilves faced each other in a game of Finland’s top league, Liiga. The capacity of the arena for a hockey game is around 13,000 spectators.

The atmosphere on the opening night was ceremonial. You could feel the excitement inside the arena and the joy was palpable.

Installed LED screens on the boards brought the existing flexible board standards to a totally new level. The unique boards that the whole world has not witnessed before made the opening show spectacular.
The game itself was full of action from the first puck drop. Aleksi Saarela of Ilves completed a hat trick after just 9:49 was played in the first period. Ilves won the historical game 6-3 against its city rival.

Tampere Deck Arena will host the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship games from the Group B preliminary round games to the Finals.

The Arena was built on top of the railway tracks next to the central station making it easy to access by train. The Official Fan Zone in Tampere will be located next to the Tampere railway station.

Tampere is one of the largest cities in Finland with a population of 225,000 in the city and almost a million within a 100-km radius. It is centrally located in the country. The train ride to the other venue, Helsinki’s Hartwall Arena, lasts just 89 minutes.
