The 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship’s Local Organizing Committee is looking for over 1,000 volunteers for various, interesting organizational tasks in Tampere and Helsinki, Finland. The volunteer recruitment is now open and ends on 20th September 2021.

Are you the important missing piece in organizing the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship? In order to achieve an unforgettable event, we need a large number of volunteers. Volunteering will provide a unique opportunity to experience an international sporting event behind the scenes, get to know organizations behind the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and to create new friendships with other sport enthusiasts.

Which tasks can I apply for? 

Volunteer tasks are related e.g. to the game event, ticket sales, security, accreditation, customer service and transportation of the official participants. More detailed task descriptions can be found in the application form.

You can apply if you are over 16 years old and excited to participate in organizing the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. We expect volunteers to be well behaved, friendly, energetic and also have various language skills. Some tasks also require special skills, such as technical skills or a driving licence. 

How will the volunteer recruitment process proceed?

The recruitment for volunteers is now open and will end on 20th September 2021. Some task-related volunteer interviews might already be done before 20th September. If you have previously volunteered for ice hockey or other events, please tell us about your experience and any special skills you may have. 

The Local Organizing Committee will select volunteers by the end of 2021. We will inform each applicant personally about the volunteer selections.

The selected volunteers will be informed about upcoming trainings by the end of 2021. The first training for the volunteers will be held in Tampere on Saturday, 15th January 2022. In addition, during the spring of 2022, we will organize 1–3 trainings depending on volunteer tasks. 

When does the volunteering begin?

Some of the volunteer tasks begin already on 1st May 2022. The tasks are mainly related to the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship games so every volunteer must be prepared to be available from 13th to 29th May 2022. We hope that you are as committed as possible to volunteering for the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship already in the application phase.

What do we expect from the volunteers?

We expect that you are able to do at least 10 shifts during the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The duration of shifts varies by task, one shift is usually 6–8 hours. A warm meal is provided to volunteers during shifts. Volunteers will also receive official championship clothing. Please note that we can’t compensate accommodation, travel or other costs during the trainings and the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. We will provide a local transport travel card during the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. 

What else should the volunteers consider? 

The taxable value of the clothing will be 40 euros maximum, which each volunteer must pay. The payment will be refunded if the volunteer doesn’t want to keep the volunteer clothing after the 2022 IIHF WM. 

The questions on the application form are in English but you can answer in Finnish, Swedish or in English. 

The 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will be played at the Tampere Deck Arena and Helsinki Arena on 13–29th May 2022.
