Volunteer selection in progress

The 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship’s Local Organizing Committee received more than 2,000 volunteer applications. Applications were evenly distributed between Tampere and Helsinki.

The volunteer recruitment for the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship ended on 20 September 2021, and the Local Organizing Committee is currently interviewing applicants. Some volunteers are selected on the basis of an interview and some on the basis of an application depending on the task.

“To our delight, there were many enthusiastic applicants and we received applications from more than 20 different countries and around Finland. Applicants came from e.g. Canada, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland,” says Heikki Hietanen, General Secretary of the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

The volunteers applied for 33 different tasks, which were related to e.g. game event, ticket sales, security, accreditation, customer service and transportation.

What´s next?

A total of about 1,300 applicants will be selected for the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The Local Organizing Committee will select volunteers by the end of 2021 and will inform each applicant personally about the volunteer selections.

The selected volunteers will also be informed about upcoming trainings by the end of 2021. The first training for the volunteers will be held in Tampere on Saturday, 15 January 2022. In addition, during the spring of 2022, the Organizing Committee will organize 1-3 trainings depending on volunteer tasks. 

When does the volunteering begin?

Some of the volunteer tasks will begin already on 1 May 2022. The tasks are mainly related to the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship games so every volunteer must be prepared to be available from 13 to 29 May 2022.

What is expected of the volunteers?

Volunteers must be able to do at least 10 shifts during the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The duration of shifts varies by task, one shift is usually 6-8 hours. A warm meal is provided to volunteers during shifts. Volunteers will also receive an official volunteers' uniform. Please note that accommodation, travel or other costs during the trainings and the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will not be compensated. A local transport travel card will be provided during the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. 

The 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will be played at the Tampere Deck Arena and Helsinki Arena from 13 to 29 May 2022.
