German forward Tim Stutzle won’t be able to return to play at the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship following consultations of the medical staff of the German national team and his NHL team Ottawa Senators.

Stutzle got injured in a tackle along the boards in Germany’s third game of the tournament against France.

“Tim had fortune in misfortune. He suffered a knee injury that will heal fast and completely. After consulting with our medical department and the Ottawa Senators we nevertheless decided to take him out of the tournament,” said German Ice Hockey Association sport director Christian Kunast. “Tim wouldn’t be treated with care by the opponents in the upcoming games and his health comes in first place.”

Germany is currently ranked third in Group A in Helsinki and in a good position to reach the quarter-finals. They will play Kazakhstan today and top-ranked archrival Switzerland on Tuesday to finish the preliminary round.
