The 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship takes place in Sweden (Stockholm) and Denmark (Herning) in May 2025. Herning has already seen overwhelming interest from volunteers. In fact, six months ahead of the event, the target of 500 volunteers has been surpassed, with 580 qualified applicants ready to help make the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Jyske Bank Boxen a success.
“The support and enthusiasm have been incredible,” says Pia Trab Worm, Volunteer Coordinator for the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, OC Herning. “So many people have already expressed their willingness to spend weeks in Herning alongside others to help make this event possible. An event of this magnitude simply wouldn't be achievable without a dedicated volunteer team. We're deeply grateful, especially in times when recruiting volunteers can be challenging.”
The applicant pool is diverse, including many individuals who also volunteered during the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Herning/Copenhagen. The people from Middle-Jutland and the entire “Hockey-Denmark” have once again demonstrated their strong tradition of community engagement. Additionally, 20% of the volunteers come from 43 different nationalities, representing countries as far afield as South Korea, Ghana, and Brazil.
Focus on Inclusion and Social Sustainability
A new initiative this year aims to recruit volunteers with special needs, ensuring the event is accessible to all. “Social sustainability is a key priority for us,” says Matilde Aidel Brixen, another Volunteer Coordinator. “We believe this inclusivity will enrich the volunteer community and make the experience more meaningful for everyone. We are committed to ensuring that volunteering is both fun and fulfilling, giving everyone memories to cherish for a lifetime.”
Volunteer Roles and Ticket Sales
The volunteers will contribute to various aspects of the event, including accreditation, media operations, transportation, game management, security, and more. Meanwhile, ticket sales are progressing rapidly, with over 75,000 tickets already sold. The goal is to have sold-out games at least when Team Denmark is playing and overall 150,000 tickets.
