Germany, Hungary and Ukraine earned first wins of tournament
Germany, Hungary and Ukraine earned victories on Day 1 of the 2024 Ice Hockey U18 World Championship, Division 1A in Frederikshavn, Denmark on Sunday.
The tournament will continue on Monday as Germany battles Hungary, Japan takes on Austria and Denmark faces off against Ukraine.

GERMANY 3, AUSTRIA 2
In the first game of the day, Germany came back from a two-goal deficit and scored three unanswered goals to defeat Austria 3-2.Only 27 seconds into the first period, Austria would get on the scoreboard. Gregor Biber scored the first goal of the tournament.
Paul Reiner strengthened Austria’s lead early in the second period.
Then with 7:08 gone by in the period, the Germany comeback began as Tobias Schwarz tallied a marker.
David Lewandowski got the equalizer 1:16 into the third period. Then, he assisted on Lenny Boos goal 48 seconds later to seal the victory for the Germans.
Germany goaltender Lennart Neisse faced 27 shots on goal while Austria’s Mika Haim saw 17 shots on goal in the game.

HUNGARY 4, DENMARK 1
Ferenc Laskawy had a goal and an assist as Hungary coasted to a 4-1 win over Denmark.The first goal of the game did not come until 15:42 of the first period. Oliver Larsen gave Denmark the lead on a goal assisted by Oliver Green and Linus Rorth.
Hungary tied the game 1:39 later on an Aleksandar Antonijevic goal, which was assisted by Laskawy.
The team took over the lead when Doman Szongoth tallied a score 1:58 into the second period.
Kolos Feher strengthened Hungary’s lead with 1:26 remaining in the frame with a score.
At 7:36 of the third period, Laskawy put the game out of reach with his goal.
Goaltenders Viktor Pasztor (Hungary) and Tobias Christensen (Denmark) each faced 25 shots on goal in the game.
UKRAINE 4, JAPAN 1
Mykhailo Haponko scored two goals and added an assist as Urkaine earned a 3-0 win over Japan.After a scoreless 20 minutes, Ukraine got the first goal of the game 7:44 of the second period. Olexi Yevtiekhov was the scorer and Haponko got the assist on the goal.
Then, it became the Haponko show as he scored two goals 2:07 apart to give the Ukrainians a 3-0 lead.
Japan would get on the scoreboard 1:24 into the third period as Hyuga Miura scored the team’s first goal fo the tournament.
Havrylo Simchuk scored an empty net goal to round out Hungary’s scoring.
Japan’s goaltender Sazuku Kudo faced 37 shots on net while Hungary netminder Alexander Levshin saw 24 shots on goal.
