The camp of the Russian U20 national team has started on Friday at the team base Novogorsk outside of Moscow. The Ice Hockey Federation of Russia invited 28 players from the domestic league as well as five candidates from teams in North America who will join later.

The players from the domestic clubs play either in the Kontinental Hockey League, the second-tier senior league VHL or the KHL’s junior league MHL. The roster will be trimmed and five players sent home before the team’s departure to Canada where five new players from who compete for clubs in North America will join.

The most famous Russian junior in North America is missing on the list as 18-year-old Andrei Svechnikov already made the NHL having played 27 games for the Carolina Hurricanes. But two other players from last year’s World Juniors are back: defenceman Dmitri Samorukov, who plays for junior team Guelph Storm in the OHL, and forward Klim Kostin, who plays for the St. Louis Blues’ AHL affiliate San Antonio Rampage.

In Canada the Russians will play three exhibition games against Sweden, the United States and Switzerland before the final 23-man roster will be announced.
