This week the ten teams of the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship hold pre-competition camps on home ice in a bubble. In these selection camps the under-20 players battle for a spot on the final roster for the tournament. At by staying together at the hotel and arena, they already get the bubble feeling they will have in Edmonton soon.

During the camps on home ice the ten teams already have their first big battle – against the coronavirus. Several players will miss the World Juniors due to Covid-19 infections.

Canada was the first country to start with the selection camp already in November with a large roster to choose from but saw the ice time shortened due to positive Covid-19 tests. The team and staff were in self-isolation for two weeks and re-opened the camp on 8 December. Defencemen Matthew Robertson, Mason Millman and Daemon Hunt and forwards Ridly Greig and Xavier Simoneau were sent home before camp resumed for health reasons and according to the return-to-play protocol.

Also the Swedish team was plagued by Covid-19. William Eklund and Karl Henriksson were cut from the roster just before joining the camp due to infections. William Wallinder and Albin Grewe were tested positive as well as head coach Tomas Monten and several other staff members. The Swedish Ice Hockey Association is looking for a solution concerning the coaching staff.

Also Team USA had to make changes to the original roster as Drew Commesso, Robert Mastrosimone and Alex Vlasic were not able to participate. Their men’s ice hockey team at Boston University had a Covid-19 outbreak few days before the start of the camp.

Players Jannik Canova, Kevin Lindemann and Yves Stoffel had to leave the Swiss camp for Covid-19 related reasons. Germany will have to travel without goaltender Tobias Ancicka as well as players Nino Kinder, Elias Lindner and Lukas Reichel due to Covid-19 while Austria had to replace Thimo Nickl after a positive test before the camp and had later to cut other players from the roster due to issues related to Covid-19.

Other teams have been luckier and haven’t had to cut players based on Covid-19 reasons.

All players are together with their teams for at least one week with several tests during this period before travelling to Edmonton on 13 December where a period of self-isolation and additional tests awaits them.

Below are the camp rosters as announced by the teams. At the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship the teams can register a maximum number of 25 players (22 skaters, 3 goaltenders). The number was exceptionally increased compared to previous years due to the special circumstances for the World Juniors with the early arrival and no additional players to be added once the teams arrive at the “competition bubble” in Edmonton.
