The Swedish Ice Hockey Association and men’s national team head coach Johan Garpenlov will let the contract expire after the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

Garpenlov will leave the position after three years as head coach and look for a new challenge. He has been in the coaching staff for Tre Kronor since 2016. The Swedish Ice Hockey Association will be looking for a new head coach starting for the 2022/2023 season.

“The role as head coach for Tre Kronor is the finest job in Swedish hockey even though the conditions have been special during the pandemic,” said Garpenlov. “Now we have an exciting season in front of us with both the Olympics and the World Championship and my full focus is on what we will do together in the coming season.”

Garpenlov was a two-time world champion as a players and also won gold as an assistant coach to Rikard Gronborg at the 2017 and 2018 Worlds. In his only World Championship as a head coach so far Sweden finished in ninth place at the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Riga, Latvia.
