The Czech men’s national team announced that defender Michal Kempny of the Washington Capitals will join the team in Tampere.

Kempny is expected to arrive in Tampere on Monday to participate in his third IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Due to a series of leg injuries Kempny wasn’t able to play a full season but managed to have his comeback. The Stanley Cup winner of 2018 split the season between the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the AHL’s Hershey Bears.

“Michal Kempny is a defender with international experience and I believe that he will be a very good reinforcement for us,” said Czech GM Petr Nedved.

When adding Kempny, the Czechs will have three goalkeepers, eight defenders and 12 forwards registered with open spots for two more skaters for which other NHL players are considered.

With Kempny’s arrival, David Musil of Ocelari Trinec will leave the team and won’t be registered to the official tournament roster.
