The 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Junior Championship Disciplinary Panel has issued a one-game suspension against Slovak player Robert Baco.

The incident happened in yesterday’s Slovakia vs. USA game with four seconds left in regulation time.

During a battle for puck possession in the USA zone, Team USA player Gavin Brindley gained puck possession with other players standing or lying around him on the ice. Baco skated towards Brindley, raised his stick with both hands and pushed the shaft of his stick into Brindley’s  neck area. After the hit, Brindley fell on the ice and Baco held down his opponent’s back with the knee until the game officials stepped in. Baco was assessed a major penalty for cross-checking.

Based on the facts, the Disciplinary Panel decided that Baco violated IIHF Official Rule 59 (Cross-Checking) and recklessly endangered Brindley’s safety.

The Disciplinary Panel decided that Baco shall be sanctioned with a one-game suspension, being tomorrow’s Slovakia vs. Latvia game.
