The IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship returns to the Czech Republic for the eleventh time. From May 10th to May 26th, 2024, the 16 best teams, just like in 2004 and 2015, will compete for medals in Prague and Ostrava. Where will the games be played?
Prague Arena
Arena Prague is one of the leading facilities in Europe. Every year, arena hosts dozens of attractive sporting and cultural events. It was opened in 2004 for IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships and since that time, it has welcomed over 600,000 people every year. The capacity of the arena is nearly 17,500 seats.
Since 2019, the complex has included a modern multifunctional congress centre, which can host cultural and sporting events, congresses, conferences, business meetings or corporate events.
The arena is currently home to the ice hockey club HC Sparta Prague. It will host the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship for the third time after 2004 and 2015.
Ostrava Arena
The second venue for the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will be the Ostrava Arena. Opened in 1986, the arena underwent significant modernisation in 2003-2004 to host the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.
The arena also hosted the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, together with Prague. In 2020, together with the Třinec arena, it hosted the IIHF Junior World Championship. The arena has a capacity of 8,812 seats.
The arena, also known as the Palace of Culture and Sport is home of the HC Vítkovice Ridera club, which is one of the traditional participants in the Czech Republic's highest league. Famous hockey legends such as František Černík, Miroslav Fryčer, and David Moravec grew up at the local club.
