With a population of 590,000 in the city and about a million in the region, Gothenburg in the southwest of Sweden is the country’s second-largest city. It hosted the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in the men’s senior category in 1981 and 2002, both times at Scandinavium, which was built in 1971 and renovated most recently in 2006. It will be the first time the World Juniors will be hosted in the city.
