Sustainability at the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship

While a large-scale event like the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship can never be completely CO₂ neutral, we are deeply committed to reducing our environmental footprint and promoting a more sustainable future. Our approach is based on circular sustainability, meaning we address not only environmental concerns, but also social and governance dimensions to create long-lasting, meaningful impact.

Environmental Initiatives

From transportation to food choices, we’ve made a number of conscious decisions to reduce emissions and minimize waste:

  • Climate-friendly meals: We use locally sourced ingredients with a strong focus on animal welfare, and incorporate a high proportion of legumes in our dishes. In selected stalls, we also test how informational signage showing the CO₂ impact of each meal affect customers to choose greener meals.
  • Fighting food waste: Through smart planning and operational initiatives, we’re minimizing food waste wherever possible.
  • Reusable water bottles: All volunteers, media and staff receive reusable bottles, with easy access to clean, local tap water and sparkling water.
  • Sustainable transport: We're using electric vehicles and free shuttle buses are available (link to shuttle busses).  We encourage fans to bike to the venue or walk using the Official Fan Walk which also offers a wide range of sightseeing and activities for kids and adults alike (link to Fan Walk).
  • Green energy: The venue is ISO-certified and powered by renewable energy. We use a battery-powered emergency generator in case of a black-out.
  • Reused materials: Much of our venue dressing and other materials are recycled or repurposed, in cooperation with other major events. E.g. venue dressing will be given to a local help-organization who sew it into bags or similar.
  • Responsible Use of Resources: We prioritize sustainable materials where it makes sense—like choosing cardboard over plastic for signage—and invest in quality, long-lasting items for e.g. bags and clothing. All purchases are tracked in a procurement log, ensuring materials are reused, recycled, or responsibly disposed of after the event.
Together, these actions move us closer to a low-impact, environmentally responsible event.

Social Responsibility

Creating a positive social legacy is a key part of our mission. The 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship is more than just a sports event—it’s an opportunity to engage, uplift, and connect with people across Denmark.

  • Community engagement: All player booths are built by a local recovery center, giving them a meaningful project to manage. In return, they receive tickets to 2025 IIHF WM games as a thank-you for their contribution.
  • Inclusive outreach: Schools, kindergartens, and special education classes have been invited to participate in small projects and to attend games.
  • School project: We’ve developed an extensive educational package with 60 curriculum-based activities across a wide range of subjects, tailored for students in grades 0–6 across the country. In addition, children have had the chance to visit local ice hockey clubs to try skating and play hockey, creating a fun and inclusive introduction to the sport.

  • Volunteer empowerment: Our volunteer program is open to everyone, including individuals with social and physical challenges. Shifts are coordinated with the volunteers, meaning, their shifts always fit their needs. All volunteers receive training.
  • Growing the game: We're sparking interest in ice hockey by engaging new fans and encouraging youth participation.
  • Funding the future: Any potential surplus will be reinvested directly into the Danish ice hockey community to support and accelerate its development.

Governance & Legacy

We’re laying the groundwork for long-term, sustainable change in how large events are planned and executed.

  • Sharing success: Our sustainable practices are being documented and shared, allowing future events—both in Denmark and abroad—to build on our legacy.
  • Skills development and learning: We put a strong focus on building knowledge and skills through hands-on internships and comprehensive volunteer training programs.
  • Boosting local economies: The 2025 IIHF WM brings business to local hotels, bars, shops, and restaurants, providing a welcome economic impact to the Host City.

A special thanks!

These sustainability efforts would not have been possible without the outstanding work of Majken Skræddergaard Urup, Head of Sustainability of the Danish OC, the support of the IIHF and expertise of Sport Event Denmark. Their vision and commitment have been central to every step of the process.
