There was plenty of excitement ahead of the afternoon clash in Esbjerg, with both the United States and Germany coming into the game on the back of strong opening performances.

The Americans had made an emphatic statement with a convincing 7-0 victory over Switzerland, while Germany had registered an impressive 50 shots on goal against outstanding Austrian goaltender Selma Luggin in yesterday's 2-0 win.

German goaltender Sandra Abstreiter was certainly in for a busier afternoon than against Austria, and she made a solid start to the game, producing several good saves during an early American power play.

The Welcke sisters tested Aerin Frankel shortly afterwards, as Germany settled into the game nicely. Carina Strobel and Tabea Botthof also managed to get some dangerous shots away, keeping the American goaltender on her toes.

However, against a team like the United States, even the slightest lapse in concentration can prove costly. Germany was unable to prevent the tournament favourites from opening the scoring in the 14th minute. Lacey Eden and Caroline Harvey combined to set up Casey O'Brien, who made no mistake with her opportunity.

It was a first major blow to Germany's hopes, and a second followed just 21 seconds before the end of the period. This time, Lacey Eden showed great skill and awareness, deftly redirecting Emma Peschel's shot past Abstreiter to double the American lead at 2-0.

Six minutes into the second period, the United States scored what was arguably the goal that put the game beyond Germany's reach. Alex Carpenter unleashed a powerful one-timer that even the otherwise impressive Sandra Abstreiter had no chance of stopping.

At 3-0, the Americans were firmly in control, and the second period turned into a physical and penalty-filled affair. The United States dominated proceedings, outshooting Germany 14-2 and creating numerous dangerous opportunities in front of Abstreiter.

At the other end of the ice, Emily Nix had Germany's only real scoring opportunity of the period, narrowly missing the target on a two-on-one rush.

Things got a little tense at the start of the third period, with plenty of pushing and shoving leading to a couple of penalties. Eventually, however, tempers cooled, and the United States added a fourth goal from close range as Hannah Bilka appeared in front of the net to finish the opportunity.

Joy Dunne then put the finishing touch on the afternoon, scoring the fifth and final goal to seal a convincing 5-0 victory for the Americans.

It was a game in which the United States faced a much sterner test than in their opening encounter against Switzerland. Nevertheless, the Americans once again showed their ability to raise the tempo when needed and take control of a game.

Germany, meanwhile, can take plenty of positives from the performance. Despite the 5-0 defeat, they came out of the game with their heads held high and showed enough quality to believe they can challenge both Switzerland and Czechia in the games ahead, provided they continue the promising form displayed in their first two outings.
