Briza, Jo, Kolbenheyer, Tunali to Council

Senior Vice-President

Petr Briza has been re-elected Senior Vice-President. Briza is former professional goalie at the highest level. He won a bronze medal with the Czechs at the 1992 Olympics. He also played in 1994 as well as six World Championships, 1990-95, during which time he won three more bronze medals (1990, 1992, 1993). In 2012, he was named the vide-president of the Czech Ice Hockey Association, a position he continues to hold, and in 2016 he was elected to the IIHF Council during which time he was the Chairperson of the Youth and Development Committee. In 2021, he was elected Senior Vice-President of the IIHF, serving as Treasurer and as Chairperson of three committees. 

In the first round of voting, Petr Briza received 47 votes (40.17 per cent), Aivaz Omorkanov 36 (30.77 per cent), Anders Larsson 13 (11.11 per cent), Zakaria Khechuashvili and Matjaz Rakovec 7 (5.98 per cent), Frank Gonzalez 4 (3.42 per cent), and Henrik Bach Nielsen 3 (2.56 per cent). Bach Nielsen was removed from the ballot and Gonzalez withdrew. Viesturs Koziols had withdrawn prior to the voting.

In the second round, Briza recieved 56 votes (47.86 per cent), Omorkanov 41 (35.04 per cent), Larsson 12 (10.26 per cent), Rakovec 6 (5.13 per cent), and Khechuashvili 2 (1.71 per cent). As a result, Khechuashvili was dropped from the ballot and Rakovec withdrew.

In the third round, Briza received 67 votes (57.26 per cent), Omorkanov 44 (37.61 per cent), and Larsson 6 (5.13 per cent).

Regional Vice-President--Americas and Oceania

Mike Tromboli named Regional Vice-President--Americas and Oceania. He was the only candidate and received 93.10 per cent of "yes" votes for election.

After four years as Vice-President, Trimboli has been the president of USA Hockey since 2021. A former player and official, he had an extensive career in coaching and has been on the USA Hockey Board of Directors since 2005. Indeed, Trimboli has been coaching for more than 40 years and was a member of USA Hockey’s task force on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. 

Regional Vice-President--Asia

Susie Jo has been elected Regional Vice-President--Asia. She received 60 votes (51.28 per cent), Omorkanov 46 (39.32 per cent), and Karatayev 11 (9.40 per cent).

A Board member of the Korea Ice Hockey Association, Susie Jo played hockey for nearly a decade. Her career culminated with participation in the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. More recently, she has turned to coaching in Korea, and she is currently an assistant coach with the men’s national team. 

Regional Vice-President--Europe & Africa

Igor Nemecek has been elected Regional Vice-President--Europe & Africa. Nemecek has extensive national and international experience. He was the president of the Slovakia Ice Hockey Federation for five years (2011-16) and has been a member of at least one IIHF committee since 2003. He was the CEO of the Organizing Committee for the 2011 World Championship, the first time Slovakia hosted the WM, and in 2019, the only other time Slovakia has hosted. Most recently, he was Sport Manager of ice hockey at the 2026 Olympics. 

In the first round of voting, Anders Larsson received 30 votes (25.64 per cent), Igor Nemecek 29 (24.79 per cent), Heikki Hietanen 21 (17.95 per cent), Henrik Bach Nielsen 17 (14.53 per cent), Zsuzsanna Kolbenheyer 7 (5.98 per cent), Clifton Wrottesley 6 (5.13 per cent), Frank Gonzalez 5 (4.27 per cent), and Marta Zawadzka 2 (1.71 per cent). Zawadzka was dropped from the ballot for the second round and Wrottesley withdrew.

In the second round, Larsson and Nemecek had 34 votes (29.06 per cent), Hietanen 26 (22.22 per cent), Bach Nielsen 15 (12.82 per cent), Kolbenheyer 5 (4.27 per cent), and Gonzalez 3 (2.56 per cent). Gonzalez was removed from the ballot and Kolbenheyer withdrew.

In the third round, Nemecek had 43 votes (36.75 per cent), Hietanen 34 (29.06 per cent), Larsson 33 (28.21 per cent), and Bach Nielsen 7 (5.98 per cent).

In the fourth round, Nemecek had 54 votes (46.15 per cent), Hietanen 42 (35.90 per cent), and Larsson 21 (17.95 per cent). As a result, Larsson's name was dropped from the ballot.

In the fifth and final round, Nemecek recieved 68 votes (58.12 per cent) and Hietanen 49 (41.88 per cent).

Female Candidates

Zsuzsanna Kolbenheyer and Merve Tunali have been elected to Council as part of the female candidate requirements (at least three of 15 total Council members). 

Zsuzsanna Kolbenheyer has been the president of the Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation since 2024 and a member of the IIHF’s Historical Committee since 2012. A lawyer by education, she is now in her fourth term as a Council member after having been first elected in 2012.

Merve Tunali has been active in ice hockey in Turkiye for more than a decade. Currently a Board member, she has coached at the junior level and enriched the development of the game throughout the country. In 2015, she established the Istanbul Skating Sports Club. 

In the first round of voting, Kolbenheyer received 63 votes (53.85 per cent), Merve Tunali 55 (47.01 per cent), Marta Zawadzka 46 (39.32 per cent), Katherine Henderson 41 (35.04 per cent), and Gudlaug Thorsteinsdottir 12 (10.26 per cent). 

In the second round, Tunali had 51 votes (43.59 per cent), Zawadzka 39 (33.33 per cent), and Henderson 27 (23.08 per cent). In the final round, Tunali had 69 votes (58.97 per cent) and Zawadzka 48 (41.03 per cent).
