Traveling to Košice BY CAR

The city of Kosice, in collaboration with the OC and private services, has created 7 auxilliary parking lots in the city. Six of these are free of charge and one, which is private and with a guard, charges a fee. They are located near the main road on access roads to the city from three directons.

From Prešov – Košice, road E50,  from Rožňava – Košice, road E57, from Milhosť, Kechnec, Seňa – Košice, road E71.

In total, there are almost 1,300 parking spots in these auxilliary lots.

The city will create an INFOPOINT at each of these lots. Staff will help drivers get from the lots to Steel Arena using public transport. These staff are being provided by the Public Transport Office of Košice City and will be easy to spot, as will be volunteers of the 2019 IIHF WM. These helpers wil also be in communication with city police who will patrol each of the lots and monitor capacity.

Public transportation

Most public transportation in Kosice is run by bus and tram. Tram routes have recently been changed, but there is only one zone. There are, however, two types of tickets: non-transferable tickets, which are valid only during the day (i.e., not valid for night connections labelled N, fast connections, and connections labelled R) and for four stops; and, transfer tickets, which are valid for 30 minutes.

You can also buy tickets that last 24 hours or 7 days. Tickets can be bought at newsstands and ticket machines, and directly from the bus driver. If you buy from the driver, though, it is more expensive and you need the exact change. It is also possible to buy tickets via text message, but only from a Slovak phone number.

On Stanicne namestie (the railway and bus station) and on Namestie osloboditelov (Hilton hotel) you can also buy tickets from machines. You need to validate your ticket upon entering the bus or tram.

Public transportation schedules and connections can be found here and here.

More information about public transportation in Kosice in English language can be found here.

Traveling to the game by public transport is free of charge

Ticket holders can use public tranport free of charge on the day they are going to a game. As well, anyone with official accreditation for the championship can use public transportation free of charge.

Schedules can be seen at the stops and online at www.kosice.sk and www.dpmk.sk. These buses and trams will also stop at all the usual stops.

Arena

The Ladislav Trojak Ice Rink was opened in 1868 with artificial ice. A roof was added to the rink after Dukla Kosice earned promotion to the top league for the 1963/1964 season. A major renovation project started in 1996 and was completed on 24 February 2006. That’s when the rink got its new name: Steel Arena.

The capacity during the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will be 8,165.

There are two public transportation stops near the ice rink – Dom umenia (House of Arts) and Krajsky sud (“County court“). The trip from either the train or bus station to the arena is only about 5 minutes. There are direct tram connections (#2 and #6) from Stanicne namestie (train and bus station) to Krajsky sud. There is also direct bus connection (#23) from Stanicne namestie (train and bus station) to Dom umenia. If you choose to walk from either the train or bus station allow 15-20 minutes to get to the arena.
