The German Ice Hockey Association has announced that Edmonton Oilers forward Dominik Kahun will join the German men’s national team at the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Riga.

The 25-year-old forward concluded his third season in the National Hockey League playing 48 games (9 goals, 6 assists) in the regular season and two games without points in the playoffs. It will be the fifth World Championship for Kahun, who was on the silver-winning team at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

Kahun is expected to arrive in Latvia tomorrow and will be able to play following a six-day quarantine. However, he will not be joined by Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl, who wasn’t able to travel in time.

“Dominik signalled that he really wanted to come to the Worlds. With his speed, skill and NHL experience he can give our game a special element. That he was able to board the plane that was the decisive reason. With Leo the circumstances were different and travel wasn’t immediately possible. That’s why we decided together that he won’t travel to Latvia,” said head coach Toni Soderholm.

With the expected arrival of Kahun, Germany will have a full roster in Riga. Today the Germans registered DEL players Dominik Bittner (Grizzlys Wolfsburg), Andreas Eder (Straubing Tigers), Daniel Fischbuch (DEG Dusseldorf) and John Peterka (Red Bull Munich).
