The 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship’s Local Organizing Committees are looking for hundreds of volunteers for various organizational tasks in Tampere, Finland and in Riga, Latvia.

The volunteer recruitment is now open and it ends in Finland on 30rd November 2022 and in Latvia on 4th January 2023.

In order to achieve an unforgettable event, we need a large number of volunteers. Volunteering will provide a unique opportunity to experience an international sporting event behind the scenes, get to know organizations behind the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and to create new friendships.

Q&A: volunteer recruitment for the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship

Which tasks can I apply for?

Volunteer tasks are available for example in Tournament Support Services, Sport Operations and Media Services. More detailed task descriptions for the available positions can be found at the end of this article.

You can apply if you are over 16 years old and excited to participate in organizing the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Some tasks may require special skills, such as technical skills or a driving license. Needed special skills are mentioned in task descriptions.

How will the volunteer recruitment process proceed?

The recruitment for volunteers is now open and will end in Finland on 30rd November and in Latvia on 4th January. Some task-related volunteer interviews might already be done during the recruitment period. If you have previously volunteered for ice hockey or other events, please let us know about your experience and any special skills you may have.

The Local Organizing Committees will select volunteers at the beginning of 2023. We will inform each applicant personally about the volunteer selections before the end of February. The selected volunteers will be informed about upcoming trainings and other volunteer related matters separately after the selections.

If you do not get selected on the first round, no worries! We will automatically save all applications to the reserve list and will be in contact in case volunteer positions become available later.

When does the volunteering begin?

Some of the volunteer tasks may begin already on the 1st May 2023. The majority of the tasks are mainly during the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship period, so applicants must be prepared to be available from 12th to 28th May 2023. We hope that you are as committed as possible to volunteering for the 2023 IIHF WM already in the application phase and will inform about cancellations as soon as it might occur.

What will volunteers benefit from the experience?

We expect that you are able to do at least 10 shifts during the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The duration of shifts varies by task, one shift is typically 6–8 hours. A warm meal is provided during shifts. Volunteers will also receive official 2023 IIHF WM volunteer uniforms.

Please note that we cannot compensate accommodation, travel or other costs during the trainings and the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

What else should the volunteers consider?

Both cities have their own application forms. You can only volunteer in one city.

The 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will be played in Finland at the Tampere Deck Arena and in Latvia at Arena Riga from 12th to 28th May 2023. The Finnish Ice Hockey Association and the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation are responsible for organizing the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The event is owned and governed by the IIHF.
