Defenceman Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets joins the U.S. men’s national team at the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

The native of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, recently finished his third full season in the NHL. He played in all 82 regular-season games this season for Columbus and had a career-high 44 points (11 goals, 33 assists). He also appeared in 10 playoff games recording six points (1 goal, 5 assists).

It will be the first IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship for the 21-year-old, who captained the Americans to World Junior bronze in 2016 where he won the Best Defenceman award and led all defencemen in points (9), goals (2) and +/- (+10).

After registering Werenski, Team USA will have a tournament roster consisting of two goaltenders, eight defencemen and 13 forwards with spots open for an additional goaltender and another skater.
