Pupkov dies of Covid-19

Former Kazakh national team player Yevgeni Pupkov passed away at the age of 45. His club HK Almaty confirmed to Kazakh media that Pupkov died from the effects of a Covid-19 infection.

Pupkov went through the hockey school of Ust-Kamenogorsk in Kazakhstan where he also debuted in senior hockey before moving to Russia. For Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk, Metallurg Novokuznetsk, SKA St. Petersburg, Amur Khabarovsk, Lada Togliatti, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg and Khimik Voskresensk he played 525 games as a defenceman at the top-level in Russia (Superliga/KHL).
He represented Kazakhstan at several occasions including the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin and the 2006 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Riga.

Just three weeks ago Pupkov was appointed assistant coach of HK Almaty.
