Mary Simon, the Governor General of Canada, announced the names of 99 people today who will be invested into the Order of Canada. Among that number is Sidney Crosby of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.

There are three levels of investiture – Companion (the highest), Officer, and Member. Crosby will be honoured as an Officer, joining the ranks of many hockey players so honoured in previous years: Father David Bauer, Scotty Bowman, Ken Dryden, Phil Esposito, Foster Hewitt, Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Guy Lafleur, Mario Lemieux, Caroline Ouellette, Mark Messier, Sam Pollock, Pat Quinn, Hayley Wickenheiser.

The Order of Canada’s motto is desiderantes meliorem patriam—“they desire a better country.” No date has yet been set for the investiture, which will take place at Rideau Hall, the residence of the Governor General, in Ottawa.

Crosby has been included for “being one of the greatest hockey players of all time and for supporting community service initiatives for youth.”

The Order was created in 1967, Canada’s centennial year, and has honoured more than 7,600 people since. It is a living honour only, meaning once a person has died he or she is no longer a member of the Order of Canada.

Crosby was the 26th member of the IIHF’s Triple Gold Club, winning Olympic gold (2010, 2014), the Stanley Cup (2009, 2016, 2017), and World Championship gold (2015). He is the only one of the 29 TGC members who captained all of these teams to victory.

Additionally, Crosby captained Canada to victory at the World Cup of Hockey in 2016. Currently in his 18th NHL season, all with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he is currently 17th all time with 1,452 career points. Internationally, Crosby has won the last 25 games in a row playing for Canada, from midway through the 2010 Olympics to perfect records at the 2014 Games, 2015 Worlds, and 2016 World Cup.
